hastelloy N nickel alloy wire welding high temperature alloy
Hastelloy N wire is a nickel-based alloy wire. It was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratories as a container material for molten fluoride salts. It has excellent resistance to oxidation and carburization in high-temperature environments, especially showing exceptional resistance to hot fluoride salts, with continuous operation in such environments possible up to around 980°C.
According to ASTM B573, the chemical composition of Hastelloy N wire is as follows:
Molybdenum (Mo): 15.0-18.0%
Aluminum + Titanium (Al+Ti): ≤0.50%
Tensile strength: 462 MPa (annealed at room temperature)
Yield strength: 148 MPa (annealed at room temperature)
Elongation: 47% (annealed at room temperature)
Melting point: 1300-1400ºC
Hastelloy N wire is typically produced by cold drawing wire rods. Manufacturers may also perform heat treatment processes to achieve desired mechanical properties and hardness levels. For example, solution treatment is often conducted at temperatures around 1160-1190°C for a certain period.
Nuclear Industry
: Due to its excellent resistance to hot fluoride salts, it is used in molten salt reactors as a material for containing and handling molten salts.
Chemical Processing
: It is utilized in chemical process equipment where high-temperature oxidation resistance is required, such as in heat exchangers, absorbers, and piping systems.
General Industrial Applications
: It can be used in various industrial applications that involve high-temperature environments and potential exposure to corrosive substances.
Standards and Specifications
ASTM B573
: This is a common standard for Hastelloy N wire, covering the requirements for its chemical composition, mechanical properties, and manufacturing processes.
ASME SB573
: This standard is related to the bar, rod, and wire forms of Hastelloy N and is often referenced in engineering and industrial applications.
AMS 5771
: This specification is also applicable to Hastelloy N wire, providing additional guidelines for its quality and performance.
Hastelloy N wire is available in various forms, such as:
Spooled Wire
: Convenient for applications requiring continuous feeding of the wire, such as welding or certain manufacturing processes.
Cut-Length Wire
: Available in specific lengths to meet different customer requirements.
Hastelloy N wire has good weldability and can be easily welded using manual or automatic welding processes. It is often used as a filler metal for welding nickel-molybdenum alloys to themselves, to steel, or to other nickel-based alloys. ERNiMo-2 welding wire is commonly recommended for this purpose.
